The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero returned back to the ancient city on Wednesday, February 27 amidst tight security and fanfare.
The emir, who spent 37 days recuperating in London, England after the failed attempt at his life in broad daylight on January 19, arrived back in Kano along with his two sons, Ciroman Kano, Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Ado Bayero and Turakin Kano, Alhaji Nasiru Ado Bayero, through the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport aboard a Nigeria Air Force plane. Both the Ciroman Kano and Turakin Kano were among the injured persons during the attack, hence rushed to United Kingdom for treatment. The emir and his children were flown to London a day after the unfortunate attack. The 83-year-old monarch was received at the airport by his senior council members led by Wamban Kano, Alhaji Abbas Sanusi and top government officials led by Commissioner for Special Duties, Brigadier General Dambazau. The emir’s aircraft touched down at around 7pm, and minutes later he alighted from the plane wearing milk color traditional attire known as Babbanriga and brown top (alkyabba). To the astonishment of his admirers, the emir walked about 50 meters on the airport tarmac to enter his already waiting black Mercedes Benz. The respected monarch, who was escorted to his palace by heavily armed security personnel comprising soldiers, police, SSS and palace guards, spent 53 minutes on transit from the airport to his palace. Despite restriction and security measures adopted at both airport and the emir’s palace, mammoth crowd converged at the royal house to witness the arrival of the emir. On reaching the palace, the atmosphere was turned boisterous to ecstatic. Some admirers especially women shed tears of joy, while others were busy yelling out praises for the monarch. Unlike in the past, this time around the return of the emir was not publicized for security reason. It was also observed that not more than 500 people received the emir at the airport for same reason, while security was tightened at his residence ahead of his arrival. A section of Kano residents, who spoke to Sunday Trust on the return of the emir expressed their happiness and gratitude to God for spearing the life of the emir and his two children. They also sympathized with the emir over the attack, which they described as unfortunate and uncalled-for. Alhaji Umar Shehu Yakasai, a business man at Rimi market in the heart of Kano municipality and an admirer of the emir, expressed happiness over his return, saying “I thanked Allah the Almighty for returning the emir health and heartily. Alhamdulilah, Allah has made the effort of the attackers a waste; they have not succeeded because Allah in His infinite mercy has protected him. “I received the news of the attack with shock because I never thought such can happen to the emir Bayero but we thanked Allah the Almighty for protecting him and the rest of the survivors. We also thanked Him for the emir’s quick recovery because a man of his age could be traumatized by such attack and which can also lead to his eventual death even if he is not physically attacked,” he said. Yakasai lamented that his worry was that the emir’s admirers were not allowed to be part of those to receive him when he arrived at the airport from UK, adding that “although we were denied that opportunity but we are happy he was fully recovered and returned home health and heartily.” Another admirer, Mallam Kabiru Ibrahim, who also described the attack as unfortunate, however, expressed his gratitude to Allah that the emir has finally returned to Kano energetically. He explained that “we are happy that not only the emir had returned but his two sons were also recovered from the minor injuries they have sustained during the attack.” Alhaji Salisu Muhammad popularly known as Danlami said the attack on the emir shocked him but he thanked God that the emir is still alive. Danlami explained that “we are calling on the government to improve security around the emir wherever he is going within and outside the state.” He further said, “I hope that the unfortunate incident will serve as deterrent to both emirate council and security agencies in the state so that they can adopt measures to forestall its occurrence in the future not only in Kano but anywhere in the country.” According to him while the emirate council should take stringent security measures of protecting the emir, government on its part should deploy more security personnel around the emir and his entourage.
