One of the suspects, 41 years old Afeez Olaitan from Oyo State, was an ex-convict. However, he told this correspondent that he was, indeed, an ex-convict but not a criminal. “I only steal antiquity which we take to neighbouring countries for sale. We sell an original antiquity between N10,000–N150,000,depending on its rarity and genuineness” ,he said.
Speaking about their modus operandi, he disclosed that one Olatunde Joseph introduced him to the business of stealing antiquities, while, one Solomon introduced him to armed robbery. He and three other members of his formed robbery gang were arrested prior to their first robbery operation which would have fetched them about N9 million.
Another armed robber, Amadi Barrack Onyebuchi, is the godfather of many robbery gangs operating across the country. He is the link between the armed robbers and the Cameroonian criminal receiver. He admitted to have received many exotic vehicles from the robbery gang which he equally sold to his buyers, one Amadu Ngiri ‘M’ and Babangida. He procured the two recovered military pistols he handed over to the robbery gang to facilitate their activities.
